Gen Z Takes Charge and saw the escalation

Yesterday, tens of thousands of young people took to the streets in more than 30 German cities under the banner “Gen Z regelt” – “Gen Z Takes Charge.” Their demands read like a greatest-hits compilation of youthful discontent: better education, affordable housing, stronger climate action, social justice, and, above all, no return of conscription. By day the protests remained largely confined to placards, chants and the obligatory selfie-with-sign ritual. The organisers had explicitly called for non-violence. Then darkness fell – and with it arrived the professional troublemakers who had, it seems, deliberately infiltrated the peaceful ranks.

Frankfurt: The Main Event

Frankfurt saw the sharpest escalation. Police and organisers put the turnout at between 8,000 and 10,000. After repeated volleys of fireworks, stones and bottles directed at officers, police dispersed the demonstration at around 6.20 p.m. Several officers were injured. Hesse’s interior minister, Roman Poseck, spoke of roughly 100 left-wing extremist agitators who had “massively attacked” the police.

What followed was pure chaos. In the city centre, particularly along the shopping street Zeil, masked rioters smashed shop windows, ransacked stores and looted. Sneakers and other goods vanished into bags. A gun shop was targeted; police recovered two weapons and made several arrests. The entire Zeil was sealed off. ARD reporters suggested the evening’s violence stemmed from small, organised groups rather than the original demonstrators. The public message, however, was unmistakable: what began as “youth protest” had, by nightfall, taken on the unmistakable look of deliberate destruction.

Cologne: Cathedral, Station and the Südstadt

In Cologne, police halted the planned march early on grounds of fireworks and face coverings. After the official dispersal, trouble flared around the cathedral and main railway station. Bottles – and even bicycles – were hurled at officers. Groups then drifted into the Südstadt and continued the rampage. Police chief Johannes Hermanns called it “sad” that peaceful young people had been infiltrated by extremists “who had nothing but violence in mind.” Water cannon were deployed. A familiar script.

Berlin: Almost Trouble-Free – Almost
At the Brandenburg Gate the main “Gen Z regelt” rally, with up to 5,000 participants, remained “virtually undisturbed.” Not so a separate gathering at Rosenthaler Platz (up to 3,500 people), where officers recorded numerous offences: criminal damage, assault, and breaches of weapons and explosives laws. Twenty-seven police officers suffered minor injuries. A police spokesman later played down the drama, insisting Berlin had not witnessed the looting scenes feared in advance. Still, fireworks, eggs and bottles flew here too.

Hamburg and the Rest
Hamburg passed a quiet afternoon, only for masked figures to rip up construction barriers, set off fireworks and set barricades alight as evening arrived. Elsewhere the protests stayed largely peaceful – or the incidents were so minor they were eclipsed by the spectacles in Frankfurt and Cologne.

The Bottom Line

By day: “Our future is not for sale!” and “Education, not bombs!”
By night: shattered glass, stolen sneakers and assaulted police officers.

The organisers distanced themselves promptly and understandably. Politicians and police pointed to “left-wing extremists” and “trouble-makers” who had infiltrated the ranks. The pattern is depressingly familiar: a largely peaceful demonstration is hijacked by a violent minority, and by the next morning the conversation centres on images of destruction rather than the original grievances.

Did Generation Z actually “take charge” of anything? Hard to say. What is certain is that some seized the moment to run riot – leaving the peaceful majority to live with the reputational damage. Welcome to the reality of the German protest business.
