Berchtesgaden. A major fire broke out overnight at the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest) on the Obersalzberg, sending the historic building at 1,834 meters into full blaze. According to current information, no one was inside at the time and no injuries have been reported. Police have provisionally arrested a suspect and are investigating the possibility of arson. Firefighting operations continued into Saturday morning.

The alarm from the building’s fire detection system reached the integrated control center in Traunstein at around 9:15 p.m. on Friday. Firefighters already saw intense flames on their approach. The first crews arrived at approximately 9:52 p.m. and confirmed that the entire structure was fully engulfed. Access proved extremely difficult because of the narrow mountain road and the high altitude; the building and its immediate surroundings can only be entered with heavy breathing apparatus. Roughly 200 emergency personnel from fire departments of six municipalities, the district fire inspection, the Bavarian Red Cross, mountain rescue, and police were deployed.

Shortly after the fire started, a suspicious individual came to the attention of investigators and was taken into provisional custody. The criminal police in Traunstein, under the direction of the Traunstein public prosecutor’s office, have taken over the investigation into the cause. While official statements initially left open whether the detained person was connected to the blaze, media reports and later updates indicated a suspicion that the fire may have been deliberately set. Police have so far released no further details about the person’s identity or the precise circumstances of the arrest.

The Kehlsteinhaus is a clear perpetrator site (Täterort) of the Nazi era. Commissioned in 1937/38 on the orders of Martin Bormann, it was built as a representative “tea house” inside the restricted Führersperrgebiet on the Obersalzberg. It formed part of the sealed-off power center of the National Socialist leadership and was used mainly for receiving diplomats, foreign guests, and private occasions of the inner circle. Adolf Hitler himself visited the building only rarely, partly because of a fear of heights. Its actual political importance remained secondary to the Berghof below, yet it was unmistakably an instrument of Nazi self-representation and power staging.

During the RAF bombing raid on the Obersalzberg on 25 April 1945, the Kehlsteinhaus escaped direct hits and survived the war largely intact, while large parts of the surrounding complex were destroyed. After the war, authorities decided against demolition. In 1952 the building was leased as a mountain restaurant and later transferred to the Berchtesgaden State Foundation. Since then it has become one of the region’s best-known tourist destinations (internationally known as the Eagle’s Nest), attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. An exhibition by the Institute of Contemporary History on the terrace addresses the building’s Nazi past. In this way the Kehlsteinhaus remained one of the few original perpetrator sites on the Obersalzberg that was preserved both as a tourist attraction and as a place of historical remembrance.

How severely the listed building has been damaged and which parts can still be saved is not yet clear. The mountain restaurant’s season had originally been scheduled to continue until early November.
