THE ICE DEAL – Trump Claims Permanent Control Over Greenland Security

Shortly after midnight, Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that a deal had been reached with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland over the future of the Arctic island.
„The United States has made a deal with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland that gives the United States permanent control over security and all other matters in Greenland. Forever,“ Trump wrote. According to him, no U.S. adversary would be allowed to build a base or make sensitive investments on the island. The U.S. would build a massive military presence at no cost to America.
The Danish government reacted much more cautiously. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s office confirmed only that Greenland, Denmark and the U.S. will sign an agreement next week to strengthen Arctic and North Atlantic security.
The Danish statement stressed that the deal is „good for NATO and Europe“ and that it explicitly „recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the right to self-determination of the Greenlandic people.“
The agreement, if signed, would massively expand the 1951 Defense Agreement that already gives the U.S. the Pituffik Space Base. The compromise appears to be: Washington gets de facto military veto power against Russia and China, Copenhagen keeps formal sovereignty to avoid a full NATO crisis.
The signing is scheduled for next week. Until the text is public, two narratives compete: Trump’s „forever takeover“ and Denmark’s „sovereignty with extended allied access“.
